Busy craftsmen
At the first ever craftsmen's festival at Villa Borg on 23 and 24 August, we showcased many facets of Roman craftsmanship. In perfect weather, numerous visitors were able to watch craftsmen at work at over a dozen stands, learn about tools and techniques, and even try their hand at some of the crafts themselves. We made use of the existing facilities, bringing both the villa's kitchen and the smithy back to life. We also brought along some of our tents, which housed additional craftsmen's stands.
Guests were able to taste freshly baked bread, learn about cheese making, and watch blacksmithing, metalworking, and wool processing. The constant hammering of the stonemason, who was creating a relief, and the carpenter, who was planing beams, also contributed significantly to the atmosphere. In between, the surveyor checked that the work was being carried out properly, while next door, children were allowed to try their hand at making roof tiles. Those who wanted to avoid physical labour could also look over the shoulder of the ointment maker, learn about Roman bathing, listen to the money changer or take a look at the writing room. Many visitors took full advantage of the offer and enabled us to have many great conversations.
