Cool Romans at hot days
The heatwave, with temperatures exceeding 40 °C in the shade, did not stop us from enjoying a wonderful weekend at the Landesmuseum Mainz on 27 and 28 June 2026. Instead of setting up in the museum’s courtyard as originally planned, our entire display was promptly moved to the considerably cooler rooms inside the museum. For us, it was a joyful return, as we had held a civilian exhibition in the Stone Hall many years ago. Having served in the meantime as temporary quarters for the Mainz State Parliament, the hall now saw our legionnaires marching between the gravestones and the monumental archway. Our civilian demonstration, featuring wool processing, weaving and cheese-making, was also much more pleasant for the audience to watch – and our stonemason felt right at home amongst the original artefacts anyway. As many other events in Mainz had been cancelled that same weekend due to the heat, the public gratefully accepted our offer, with the result that by Sunday the museum’s educational rooms were absolutely packed and the organiser’s expectations were exceeded.
