A huge turnout at the Limes Festival in Xanten
Last weekend, we took part in the traditional Limes Festival at the Xanten Archaeological Park with over 40 military and civilian actors. The programme featured two daily demonstrations on Roman battle formations and artillery, which we carried out with the support of the light infantry of Cohors IIII Vindelicorum, the Roman cavalry of Legio Rapax and a Balearic slinger. The highlight of each day was the grand procession of all participating groups across the park, from the LVR Roman Museum to the Harbour Temple. Between the programme items, the audience had ample opportunity to take a look at the soldiers’ daily lives in the military camp, or to learn more about Roman wool processing or try their hand at Roman games in the civilian area. And anyone who listened carefully could not only appreciate the numerical strength of the troops during the roll call, but also hear our tribune’s pre-battle address to the soldiers, delivered in Latin.
