Summer, sunshine, Roman camp
On 28 and 29 June, we spent a Roman weekend in bright sunshine at the Xanten Archaeological Park. As usual, we had set up our large military camp on the lawn right next to the LVR Roman Museum and supplemented it with a few civilian tents to offer the interested public an insight into Roman military and civilian life. Our artillery in particular got its money's worth on the large area and was able to delight visitors with two extensive firing demonstrations per day. The three daily military presentations were complemented by small, spontaneous bag marches by some legionaries across the park to the arena. Those who found this too strenuous in the high summer temperatures could also relax in the shade with a game of dice.
